Organizing Texture in a Perceptual Space

Several features can be extracted from a texture to represent it as a point in a high dimensional space. In this paper we advocate the use of perceptually relevant features in order to obtain a space that appeals to the intuition of a human observer. To show the feasibility of our proposal in this paper we detail the construction of a two-dimensional perceptual space based on local directionality and local contrast. The results obtained testing the validity of the proposed classification against some benchmark texture database are also reported.
